Project Announcement: 2026 Library Launch in Ladakh, India
The Maryam Library Foundation (www.maryamlibraryfoundation.org) is proud to announce a new collaboration with Literacy International (https://literacyintl.org/) to establish four new libraries in underserved communities across the Ladakh region of India.
This project aims to provide high-quality books and educational resources to over 2,200 students, fostering a culture of reading and lifelong learning in some of the most remote areas of the country.
Our mission is to transform education through accessible libraries. We believe every child deserves a space that sparks curiosity and supports academic success. In Ladakh, where geographical isolation can limit educational resources, these libraries serve as vital windows to the world.
By combining the infrastructure expertise of the Maryam Library Foundation with the global educational reach of Literacy International, we are building more than just bookshelves; we are creating hubs for training, skill acquisition, and community empowerment.
Suru Valley Public Higher Secondary (Kargil): Established over 40 years ago, Suru Valley Public Higher Secondary School is a highly regarded educational institution located in Kargil, Ladakh. Serving as the largest school in this library initiative, it currently supports nearly 1,000 students from Kindergarten all the way through their critical 12th-grade examinations. The school operates as a co-educational, private institution affiliated with the State Board, offering instruction in both English and Urdu.
Because Suru Valley Public Higher Secondary School spans both early childhood education and higher secondary grades, the upcoming library will serve as a multi-functional academic hub.
Muthhary Public Primary Department School (Kargil): Operating under the Mutahhary Educational Society (established in 1984), Muthhary Public School has long been a cornerstone of modern, quality education in the Kargil region. The institution's overarching mission is to provide holistic educational access to students from the town of Kargil as well as surrounding remote villages, with a specific focus on uplifting poor and deserving students. The Primary Department (often referred to locally as the "Lower Wing") focuses exclusively on the critical early years of education, nurturing young minds in both traditional academics and ethical responsibility.
Serving 560 young learners from Kindergarten through 6th grade, the Primary Department is uniquely positioned to shape foundational learning habits. The school prides itself on a dedicated teaching staff that balances academic instruction with holistic development, ensuring students build strong early reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
Because early childhood is the most crucial period for cognitive development and language acquisition, the new library provided by the Maryam Library Foundation and Literacy International will be a transformative addition for these 560 students.
Muthhary Public Higher Department School (Kargil): Located in the Kurbathang area of Kargil, the Higher Department (HD) of Muthhary Public School serves as the specialized secondary division for students transitioning from primary education. Managed by the Mutahhary Educational Society, this campus is part of a larger network established in 1984 to provide "modern quality education" to the youth of Kargil and its surrounding remote villages. The HD campus is particularly known for its rigorous academic environment and its commitment to developing "responsible, disciplined, and clean" citizens.
With 300 students in the critical 7th to 10th-grade bracket, the Higher Department focuses on preparing students for their first major academic milestone: the Board Examinations.
For students in the 7th–10th grade range, the library will serve as a bridge between foundational learning and professional aspiration.
Imamiya Mission School (Leh): Founded in 1982 in the picturesque Chuchot village near Leh, Imamiya Mission School began with just 20 students and two teachers. Over the last four decades, it has grown into one of Ladakh’s premier educational institutions, now serving nearly 400 students. The school is a pioneer in the region for its "holistic education" model, which blends academic rigor with technological literacy and deep-rooted cultural and moral values.
Imamiya Mission School is distinct for its forward-thinking curriculum and commitment to sustainability:
In a region where "diverse literature is traditionally limited" due to geographic isolation, the new library established by the Maryam Library Foundation and Literacy International will be a critical asset for these 400 learners from Kindergarten to 10th Grade.
The establishment of these four libraries across Kargil and Leh represents a monumental shift for over 2,240 students, transforming the educational landscape of one of the world's most remote high-altitude regions. By equipping schools like Suru Valley and Imamiya Mission with diverse, high-quality literature, the project bridges a critical resource gap, moving beyond rote textbook learning to spark genuine curiosity and global awareness. For the 860 younger learners at Muthhary Primary and Imamiya, these libraries provide the essential building blocks of early literacy and imagination, while the 1,300 older students at Suru Valley and Muthhary HD gain a sophisticated research hub to support their transition into higher education and professional life. Ultimately, this initiative does more than place books on shelves; it empowers a new generation of Ladakhi youth with the critical thinking skills and academic resources necessary to thrive as global citizens while remaining deeply rooted in their unique cultural heritage.
Building these futures requires a collective effort. Every library we build in the high-altitude regions of Kargil and Leh is a testament to what can be achieved when a global community rallies behind a single cause: the right to read. Your involvement ensures that geography is no longer a barrier to knowledge.
You can support this specific initiative through the following avenues:
1. Financial Contributions: Investing in Infrastructure
Donations are the lifeblood of this project. Unlike general funds, contributions to this initiative are directed toward the tangible components of a functional library:
Book Procurement: We curate diverse, age-appropriate collections in English, Urdu, and Hindi, ensuring students have access to both curriculum-aligned academic texts and world-class literature.
Library Furnishing: Your support helps us create inviting learning environments with high-quality shelving, seating, and study carrels designed for the unique climate of Ladakh.
Librarian Training: A library is only as good as its steward. We invest in training local educators on cataloging, literacy engagement, and resource management.
2. Advocacy: Amplifying Our Reach
You don’t need to make a financial contribution to make a massive impact. Awareness is a powerful tool for change:
Social Sharing: Follow our journey on social media and share the stories of the students at Suru Valley and Imamiya Mission. Your share could reach a potential corporate sponsor or a lifelong donor.
Community Engagement: Host a "Literacy Awareness" event or a digital fundraiser. Educate your local community about the challenges faced by students in remote Himalayan regions and how we are bridging that gap.
3. Corporate Partnerships and Matching Gifts
If you work for an organization committed to Global Goal 4 (Quality Education), consider championing a corporate partnership. Many companies offer matching gift programs that can double the impact of individual donations, or they may choose to "Adopt a School" to fully fund one of the four libraries in this project.
4. The "Gift of Literacy" Dedication
Consider making a donation in honor of a loved one, a favorite teacher, or a fellow book-lover. We offer the opportunity to include digital or physical bookplates in our collections, serving as a lasting tribute to those who believe in the power of education.
