Ghana 40 Library Project
We're thrilled to announce the launch of our newest initiative: building 40 libraries in Ghana! Building on the incredible momentum of our success in Tanzania, the Maryam Library Foundation is turning its eyes toward West Africa. Our mission remains the same, but the need in Ghana presents a unique and urgent call to action.
Why Ghana?
While Ghana has made great strides in education, a stark divide remains between urban centers and rural villages. In many remote areas, there is only one library for every 500,000 residents. By establishing 40 libraries, we are placing books directly into the hands of those who are currently furthest from the reach of traditional infrastructure.
Recent data shows that nearly half of students entering secondary school struggle with basic literacy because they lacked foundational reading materials in their younger years. Most schools in Ghana do not have functional libraries. Our project will provide the "missing link"—the storybooks, reference guides, and science texts that turn a classroom into a true center of learning.
Many Ghanaian schools currently use a "double-track" system to manage high student enrollment. This means students have significant periods of time away from the classroom. Our libraries will serve as essential community hubs, providing a safe, productive space for students to continue their education and self-study even when their specific "track" is not in session.
The Ghanaian government has made foundational literacy and numeracy a national priority for 2026. However, budget gaps often leave rural schools without the actual books needed to fulfill this goal. The Maryam Library Foundation will bridge this gap, ensuring that "every child’s right to read" is a reality, not just a policy.
Ghana has a vibrant, young population with immense potential. By providing access to diverse stories—ranging from African history to global geography—we are fostering a sense of pride and ambition. We believe that by giving a child a book today, we are giving Ghana a leader tomorrow.
How will this project help?
By building 40 libraries across Ghana, we aim to:
Improve literacy rates: Providing access to books will encourage a love of reading and improve literacy skills among children and adults alike.
Enhance educational opportunities: Libraries will provide crucial resources for students, supporting their academic success and expanding their knowledge.
Foster community development: Libraries serve as vital community hubs, offering spaces for learning, gathering, and accessing information.
Empower women and girls: Improved access to education and information can help empower women and girls to pursue their dreams and contribute to their communities.
Ghana is ready. Our books are getting ready. Are you?
How can you get involved?
We need your support to make this project a reality! Here's how you can help:
Donate: Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference. Your donation will directly support the construction and equipping of libraries in Tanzania.
