Zungulukani School Library, Kenya

Coming up by March 2024

ZUNGULIKANI  PRIMARY SCHOOL LIBRARY PROJECT

Zungulukani primary school with a population of 248 students is situated in the Taita Taveta county in Kenya.

It is an  extremely remote school with students coming from very vulnerable backgrounds. The area is extremely dry and has not experienced rainfall for the last 4 years.

The situation has even gotten worse right now that the school doesn't even have clean drinking water and it has to be sourced from the neighboring counties.

Help Aid Africa already has a feeding program at the school and that helps keep the kids at school hence helping in their education. Before the feeding program started, most students were fainting in the school because of hunger and most of the children were malnourished.

The school doesn't have enough infrastructure to accommodate all the students, there are fewer classrooms and with the implementation of the new junior secondary school system in the kenyan education system, the primary school students at Zungulukani primary school are forced to share their classrooms with the junior secondary school students.

The school is also under staffed and with no learning materials . The only learning materials at the school are the text books belonging to the tutors and those aren't even enough to educate those children.

The Zungulukani community doesn't have any bookshops around, no cyber cafes, no libraries , nor do they have supermarkets around where they can get access to study materials for their kids.

The community calling upon Help Aid Africa and the Maryam Library foundation to help set up a library in the area , specifically at Zungulukani primary school . The library will help better the education of the kids and help improve their school performances, languages , sharpness , IQ level and will even help them have a glimpse of the modernized education system while learning about the outside world.

Having a library at Zungulukani primary school will also play a great role in improving the kids ability to express themselves , self learn and discover new interests that can help in determining their future careers.

The quality of education at the school will also improve since the students will be doing research on a number of things before they are even taught. The role of the teacher will be to expound on what the students will have already learned from the library.

Also having a variety of books will help in diversifying their natural course of discovery at a young age. This will also help the students in building intrinsic interests in a number of things and choosing with confidence their next direction after graduating from the school.

Since most of the subjects here are taught in English as the national language, it is recommended that the books which will stock the library be of the English language. Those books can be categorized as follows:

In order to implement and have a fully functional library, the school needs to have an empty room that can be solely used for the library. That room should have shelves installed in and each shelf with a tag of the type of the book that will be put on it.  The room should at least be able to accommodate 10 to 15 students at each specific time and should have a library that can help in keeping the records of book allocations.
